Josh Smith RTOE
By Ian Levy
Umm, so the Detroit Pistons waived Josh Smith yesterday. Of course we needed to discuss this, so we sat down for a RTOE.
Wait, what, huh, how, why, seriously? What was your initial reaction to hearing the Josh Smith news?
Jack (@jackhaveitall):
Lol. #LifeComesAtYouFast
Zach (@ZachOliverNBA):
It was weird. I woke up, looked at my phone and saw all this about Josh Smith and was very confused. So, confused, and a bit surprised.
Chris (@ChrisBarnewall):
Whattttttttt
Where do you think Josh Smith ends up?
Jack:
I’m sure Sacramento would love to get him, but if you’re Josh Smith, why would you want to sign with them? I think he ends up with Dallas or Houston. Dallas would make sense as he would bolster their frontcourt after losing Wright, and you already know Cuban isn’t afraid to throw money around. As for Houston, they’ve already expressed interest, and Smith apparently expressed intrest in joining them. Plus, as we all know, money talks. And Houston also has the most money to offer.
Zach:
I think there’s about three or four teams that really do make sense for him and them. The Clippers, Rockets, Mavs and Heat would be those four teams. Sure, the Kings might want him, but, as Jack said, why would he want to go there? If I had to pick out of those four, I’d say Houston gets him because A) they’ve had previous interest, B) he’s good friends with Dwight Howard and C) they have the most money, of those teams, to offer him. The Kings will go like a mad man after him, though.
Chris:
The only team that seems crazy enough to want him is Houston, so I guess Houston. It’s rare to see someone actually want Josh Smith these days.
If you were a general manager, would you sign him?
Jack:
I think if I was a GM for a Western Conference team such as Dallas/LAC/Houston, you have to offer him a deal. Worst case scenario, you just cut him loose after a month or so. But best case? Man, if you get Josh Smith playing at a high level, he could be a huge difference maker.
Zach:
Oof. It would probably depend on my team’s position. If we’re rebuilding, no. If we’re looking to contend and need one more piece who could help on the defensive end and give the team a good passing big man, sure. I wouldn’t want to give him a big amount of money, but I would consider him if I was in a position to contend.
Chris:
If I’m in a situation where I need/can take a risk on a player, and can get him on a two year deal without spending too much money, sure. But if I’m rebuilding or a contender I’d probably avoid him.
Give a vine/gif/video that you think best encapsulates this move:

Zach:
Be well sweet prince, be well.
Chris:
Did you see how much money Josh Smith is going to make if he decided to just take the season off?
