Kendall Marshall, former North Carolina Tar Heel, Phoenix Sun, Los Angeles Laker, and Milwaukee Buck, is currently without an NBA team. He’s also now without a blue check mark.

That’s right, Marshall lost his verified status on Twitter dot com earlier today, which is strange, to say the least. You see, getting verified is really the only accomplishment that exists on Twitter. Sure there are follower benchmarks, but followers can be bought. That blue check mark, however, that’s priceless.

It’s a status symbol, a mark of your importance to the field you have chosen. Whether it be journalism, music, sports, etc., the blue check mark places you among the elite. It’s not based on number of followers, or number of tweets, and you cannot request verification. The only qualification is that you’re a “highly sought user.”

Of course, there are ways in which someone can lose the blue check mark. Changing their “@” or protecting their tweets can result in the loss. So too can violating Twitter rules or terms of service. It doesn’t appear, however, that he has done any of these things. So what’s going on with Kendall Marshall’s blue check mark?

Well, there is this.

Could it be? Was Marshall’s diss of Drake’s diss track the end for his verification status? It seems unlikely, because as Drake said recently, “f*** goin’ online, that ain’t part of my day.” So if Drake isn’t going online, how would he have seen Marshall’s tweet? At the same time, Drake is surely powerful enough to get someone’s Twitter verification revoked. So while we remain skeptical, it is possible Drake has something to do with this.

So what now? We have reached out to Twitter dot com, but have not as of yet received an answer.

So until we do, we will continue to search for clues as to why Kendall Marshall’s blue check mark suddenly disappeared.

Consider this case open. If you have any leads be sure to drop us a line on Twitter dot com (@FriendlyBounce) or send us an email: thefriendlybounce at gmail dot com.

UPDATE: We have a lead in the case. Mike Johnson notes that he believes Marshall did in fact protect his tweets for a brief period of time. If that is the case, it was most certainly the reason Marshall’s blue check mark disappeared.

We have reached out to Marshall for comment on whether or not he did in fact protect his tweets in the past few days.

UPDATE:

The blue check mark is back! It’s lit!
